Thumbprint Family Tree Retirement Gift

For many of us, a large portion of our days is spent at work. Research shows the average person will spend 90,000 hours at work over a lifetime.

When Eldon, our organization’s CFO, decided to retire after 28 years, his work family wanted to find a special gift for him to remember us by.

Birthday Cake Not Birthday Candles

My girlfriends and I love to celebrate just about everything, and we especially make an effort to be together for our birthdays.

birthday-cake-not-birthday-candles-thoughtful-gift-ideaElise brought a box of four individually packaged cakes made from the Original YaHoo Baking Co.  Of course, you can make your own or purchase from a local bakery.

Janiece had fun trying to choose either the Bourbon Pecan, Chocolate Espresso, Rum Crunch or Chocolate Chip Amaretto Liquor Cakes.

They were delicious and the perfect size. Besides, who needs the calories of a regular size cake?

Prior to Elise lighting the four candles, she said:

“This is a birthday cake but not birthday candles.”

Then she said:

Stepping Into Retirement Celebration

- - Retirement

My co-worker, Judy, retired after 36 years, and we wanted to celebrate her retirement in grand style.

retirement-theme-decorations-thoughtful-gift-ideaJust a plain retirement cake and punch would not do. We were looking for the WOW! factor to represent her years of service.

We decorated our agency’s conference room with fancy and fabulous decorations of heels, pearls and jewels with the theme of  “Stepping into Retirement and Kissing OHFA Goodbye.”

Judy’s favorite color is red so we provided red cut-out lips on popsicle sticks for all employees – to kiss her goodbye! Continue Reading

Pep Rally Office Retirement Party

- - Birthday, Business, Retirement

Our office landscape is changing due to the retirement of baby boomers. We’ve already had three retire this year!

pep-rally-retirement-office-party-thoughtful-gift-ideaWhen a longtime employee is retiring, it can get teary-eyed and emotional but a fun office retirement party will bring out the celebration and laughter.

Phil retired after 30 years and for his send-off we organized a pep rally style retirement party with six employees participating as “cheerleaders.”

Each cheerleader had a card with a letter that together spelled R-E-T-I-R-E. Individually, they would raise their card with their letter and enthusiastically call out, “Give me an R” and the audience would loudly reply “R.”

The next cheerleader would hold their card up and say “Give me an E” and so on until the word R-E-T-I-R-E had been spelled.

To further excite the crowd in the room, the cheerleaders asked in unison, “What does it spell?” The audience would scream their response, “RETIRE!” This went on a couple more times. Continue Reading

& Happily Ever After | Anniversary Gift

I wanted to do something in honor of my dear friends’ 45th  wedding anniversary but didn’t have a clue. A thoughtful gift for a couple who has been married a long time.

and-happily-ever-after-anniversary-thoughtful-gift-ideaWhile walking through the craft store, I noticed there were large alphabet letters in a variety of materials such as metal, ceramic, wood and some with lights. I also saw an ampersand sign – &.

How these ideas infiltrate my mind is a mystery but my first thought was And… to our next anniversary! Several more sayings popped in my head of what couples can look forward to doing next.

And…

to our next anniversary
to our next dinner and drinks
to our next dance
to our next sunset
to our next adventure
to whatever we want it to be

“Swing Into Retirement” Gift Ideas

I have had two co-workers retire within weeks of each other. One is a huge fan of the New York Yankees, and the other enjoys playing golf.

new-york-yankees-bat-swing-into-retirement-thoughtful-gift-ideaBecause these men like the swing of a baseball bat or a golf club, I’ve named this gift idea “Swing into Retirement.”

John loves his Yankees and for his gift his co-workers ordered an original New York Yankees Louisville Slugger bat with his name engraved on it. They also got him a wooden baseball bat holder so he can display the bat on his wall.

Each employee signed the bat with a black Sharpie. Afterwards, the bat was sprayed with a thin layer of clear lacquer paint to preserve the signatures.

He also received a pair of tickets to see the New York Yankees play the Texas Rangers.
